Dog basicsI normally start my group training sessions with a short lecture and I thought I can just share that here, so anybody could learn a bit more about dog basics. My normal lecture consists of the following subjects:
PuppiesMy subject 'puppies' originates from the many questions I get regarding what is the best time to train a dog. And to me that is kind of a 'non-question' as to me dog training starts at birth and ends until a dog dies. Of course there is more to this and I think the main thing is like what you want to teach your dog. And related to formal dog training, like teaching a dog tricks, I know indeed that the best way to start that is when a dog is around six months old. But I am not really into training dog tricks. The main thing I teach is about your dog listening to you, your dog being obedient. And obedience training starts at birth, as a mother starts teaching her puppies shortly after birth, like what she wants or likes and what she does not want or like. And puppies will just follow. And having had several dogs for quite some time my experience is that dogs always keep 'trying'. Especially Adam, the first dog we had, was a very stubborn dog who wanted to have his way until he died when being around 12 years old. So it was important to put him back into his place, being a dog, otherwise he would just rule the house, which I believe is not the right way of being a responsible dog owner.
